Chapter Seven
Shock didnât begin to describe what Molly was feeling. Was someone making fun of her? Was their charade working too well? Or did she need to hunt down the rumor monger and stomp the living daylights out of their gossip network?
Suddenly there was a crowd around them and Des was shaking hands in response to the congratulations being bandied about.
Nicole Burns approached her. âWhy didnât you say something about your engagement?â
âI didnât know we were making it public yet.â Way to land on your feet, Molly congratulated herself. Go with the flow and all that.
âDes must be excited. He couldnât have picked a more public place to make the announcement. Let me see the ring.â Nicole grabbed her hand, the left ring finger conspicuously naked.
Oh, great. If she blew this, Des was going to rue the day he thought up this stupid plan. âI donât have one yet. Itâs all been pretty sudden.â
Nicole shook her head, disbelief lurking behind her smile. âNice going, Molly. Landing Des OâDonnell is the stuff of legend.â
âThatâs me. Legend girl.â She nodded in his direction. âExcuse me. I have to go see my fiancé now.â
Why should everyone be so astonished that she could land the legend? Then again, no one could be more astonished than she. Molly felt as if sheâd awakened in a cockeyed version of Rip Van Winkle, except she hadnât gone to sleep and sheâd only been absent ten minutes.
Finally she worked her way through the throng surrounding Des to his side. âMiss me, darling?â
âI missed you something awful. But I always do when weâre apart.â His grin, full of the devil on charm pills, was mocking her.
âFunny you should mention that. I canât leave you alone for a minute.â
âIâm lost without you, Molly.â He knew she knew what heâd done and was really laying it on thick.
And then he gathered her into his arms, no doubt getting into his part. But darned if her body didnât have a mind of its own as the blood pounded in her head and her breath caught. He nuzzled his lips close to her ear and when the resulting tingles subsided enough for her to think straight, she heard him whisper only for her to hear, âJust play along.â
Then he bent her back, supporting her with his strong arms as he kissed her thoroughly. Cheers, whistles and applause erupted from the crowd surrounding them, but her hammering heart nearly drowned out the noise. Her senses were still spinning when he straightened her and settled his arm around her waist, keeping her possessively against his side. That was a good thing, because without his support, sheâd have melted at his feet like chocolate in a fondue.
Whatever game he was playing now, God help her, she liked it. She felt like Cinderella at the ball doing her thing in the glass slippers. And what was the harm? This time she was in on the gag; they both knew it was pretend. So sheâd play along and when it was over, sheâd move on with her heart intact.
